So with the bulk of my first batch of Bavarians painted, it’s now time to turn my attention to basing. Here are my quick steps for basing quickly!
1. Glue the figures to your bases. I use battlefield Accessories 3mm MDF bases, although 1.8mm would also work. I avoid sticking plastic miniatures to plastic bases with plastic cement…you never know when you might want to change your mind, and that stuff is unforgiving! SO ALWAYS USE white glue!
2. Once the glue is dry give the bases a liberal coat of Battlefield Accessories basing mix. (I’m using mud, as I like the way it takes a wash). Make sure you mound up around the base edges so as to hide them. The nice thing about basing mix is that it will hold its shape as it drys, so how you leave it is how it will stay. Always let it dry for 24hrs.
3. Once dry apply your favourite basing colour wash. We use woodland Scenics Earth Undercoat.
4. Once the wash is dry I apply patches of PVA glue and then swish the base through my flock mix. (Again mainly woodland scenics). Dust off excess and then allow to dry.
5. For the final touch I add a few Lead Bear Tufts.
So hopefully you can see a pretty short and sharp basing process which has some pretty good results. Of course in steps 4 and 5 you can really go to town with things like twigs, small rocks or any model bits you have lying around.
